Diets are something people go on when they want to shed a few pounds. Drastic dieting often referred to as extreme fasting is done by people who want to lose 20-40lbs in a very short period of time. Drastic dieting does more harm to the body in the long run and can actually cause your body to make you gain weight quickly once the fast, or cleanse is complete.
This doesn’t mean that all cleanses, or fasts do harm to people when they do them. The purpose of a proper cleanse is to eliminate toxins, and the build up of chemicals in the body. Drastic dieting hurts you by starving you to the point of depriving your body of much needed calories, nutrition, vitamins, and fats for an extended period of time by falsely calling it a fast.
A proper fast versus a drastic diet will only be done for a short period of time. Often people will consume only a liquid diet fortified with vitamins, minerals, and at least some calories and essential fats (such as an avocado vitamin shake) to not starve the body. Once the fast is completed people will resume their normal eating habits. Those who perform a drastic will consume weeks of water with lemon and cayenne pepper added. There will be absolutely no caloric, fat, or mineral intake into the body.
When the body has some sort of nutrition being taken in it will not go into starvation mode, but still burn off excess fat stores if needed. Whereas if it has nothing at all being taken in, the body will go into starvation mode burning off excess fat restores. Once food begins to be consumed again, the body will react harshly and store it all as fat because it doesn’t know when it’s next meal will come in. This is the reason why drastic dieting hurts you, your metabolism can be completely changed by choosing the wrong type of diet.
